What is Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder?

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of distorted thoughts and behaviors. This personality disorder is thought to affect approximately one-percent of adults in the United States. Individuals with this disorder are thought to be at a higher risk of anxiety disorders and stress-related medical illnesses.

Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder


Individuals with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder typically experience:

A significant preoccupation with perfection, control, and order
Rigid behaviors, resistance to change, and inflexibility
Often described as dependable, rigid, stern, and stubborn
Feelings of helplessness in uncontrollable situations

Behavioral and cognitive therapies are often highly effective and allow individuals to develop new coping skills, ways of thinking, and healthier behaviors.
